OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS VS OKLAHOMA SOONERS: 12/02/2016: PREVIEW AND PREDICTION

2 DEC 1:21 AM EST // BY HAYDEN BRADLEY / FEEL THE ACTION

The Oklahoma Sooners will be visited by the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a matchup to decide the Big 12 champion. Both teams are hoping for an outside shot at the College Football Playoff, but it seems unlikely with Colorado and Washington facing off for the Pac 12 championship, and Penn State facing Wisconsin for the Big 10 championship. In order for either team to have a shot at the CFP Colorado would need to beat Washington, Wisconsin would need to beat Penn State, Virginia Tech would need to beat Clemson and they would need to pass idol Michigan, and jump Colorado. Even then the committee would need to decide Oklahoma St or Oklahoma would be more worthy then the two of the four B1G teams sitting in the top seven.

The Sooners have played much better defense over the past four weeks since their 66-59 win over Texas Tech. The Sooners Baker Mayfield ranks second in completion percentage, and first in yards per attempt and QBR among all college QBs. His connection with Dede Westbrook has been the best connection in all of college football as they’ve connected for 1,200 yards, 20+ yard receptions, and receiving TDs. The Sooners bring the second best offense in college football into this game and will need help from their defense to stop the 14th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys offense. The Sooners will need a big outing from their defense, but against top ranked offenses they have struggled, allowing 33 vs Houston, 45 vs Ohio State, 46 at TCU, 40 vs Texas, and 59 at Texas Tech. All of those games occurred in the first seven weeks of the season and since the Sooners have allowed 19.75 points per game.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will try to stop the great passing attack of the Sooners. In order to stop the Sooners they’ll need to first stop Dede Wesbrook who has 862 yards, 17 plays of 20-yard receptions, and 11 touchdowns more than the next closest teammate. The Sooners should put a corner and a safety on Westbrook all game long in order to give themselves a chance at stopping the connection with Mayfield. The Cowboys Mason Rudolph has thrown for 3591 yards and 25 touchdowns including 1159 and nine touchdowns to James Washington. The connection leads the 6th ranked passing attack in college football and they will need to be at the top of their game to beat the Sooners defense that has been better in recent weeks. If Oklahoma State is to have a shot in this game they will need to win in a shootout with the Sooners.

Prediction

The Sooners are big favorites in this game, and rightfully so. With the line continuing to move closer to the Cowboys side the Sooners are starting to look like a better bet each day. With the better play of the Sooners defense they should be able to cover the spread with their top notch passing attack.

Opening Line: Sooners -13.5

Current Line as of midnight 12/02/2016: Sooners -11

Pick: Sooners -11
