The family-centered care fosters partnerships among staff, patients and their families. This approach supports children during treatment and empowers them to reach their maximum potential to achieve their dreams.

The Houston Shriners Hospital traces its origins to the Arabia Temple Crippled Children’s Clinic that was housed within the Baptist Sanitarium in downtown Houston from 1920–1932.

In 1932, the facility relocated to the then downtown Methodist Hospital. The Arabia Shriners approached the Blue Bird Ladies Auxiliary to build the “Little Hospital,” also known as the Blue Bird Cottage, where the clinic was housed from 1934–1949.

The clinic later took its place in the new Texas Medical Center and was a hospital-within-a-hospital at the Hermann Hospital from 1949–1952, until the new adjoining building was completed.

Arabia Temple Crippled Children’s Clinic and Hospital opened in 1952. It was subsequently renamed Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in 1966.

We built and moved to our current location in 1996.

Our commitment to the community

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston, like the other U.S. based hospitals in the Shriners Hospitals for Children health care system, reaffirms its commitment to excellence of care through the development of its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The CHNA is a requirement for tax-exempt hospitals to engage their servicing community every three years and assess their health needs. Based on the findings, we have developed an action plan to work alongside community stakeholders to address the health needs of the community.
